Scream 4 Review

Scream, the movie that started the 15-year franchise that has proved to be entertaining and successful and Scream 4, the movie that bought it back from the dead after 11 years, we once again follow the story of Sidney Prescott and how the past never really goes away. We also see the return of the iconic ‘Ghostface’ to re-ask the question ‘Name the killer in Friday the 13th

Sidney Prescott returns to Woodsboro after tens years since the massacre by Billy Loomis as part of her book tour. From the moment she arrives, Ghostface once again begins killing students from Woodsboro High, including her young cousin’s friends. Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley team up once again to prevent the murders, but could Sidney’s cousin be hiding something from the rest of the cast.

This film delivers the same on what the other films in the franchise did, humour, gore and plenty of deaths, the actors delivered and the film ended with a surprising twist. The plot is similar in the fact that the deaths took place in a similar order to the ones in scream.

Overall, the film is worth watching and definitely deserves its place in the scream franchise.

First Class Action

1st June saw the release of X-men: First Class, the prequel to the previous films. It starred James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr respectively. The film also shows the progress of Erik’s anger and the eventual lead to his and Charles separation, it also shows how Charles ended up being paralysed.

At a German concentration camps in Poland in 1944, Erik Lehnsherr bends a metal gate with his mind when he is separated from his parents. In a New York mansion, you telepath Charles Xavier meets homeless shape-shifter Raven.

In 1962, Charles Starts up a school and later a team, for humans with superhuman abilities. Among them is Erik Lehnsherr, his best friends… and future nemesis.

X-men first class is an action-packed, tense and well-formulated movie which answers questions from the previous films, how did Charles end up in a wheelchair? What happened betweens Charles and Erik? First Class answers these questions and more as the film progresses, we even see a cameo appearance from Wolverine.

An amazing action-packed film with a very good plot, well worth a watch and a film you will never forget and a great way to show the origins of the 2 iconic characters.

Insidious- is IT haunting you?

Insidious, is it as scary as it sounds? The answer is yes, the trailer shows some terrifying bits, but this is nothing compared to the terror of the film, James Wan does not disappoint, making you jump when you least expect it. Renai and Josh Lambert have moved into a new house with twins, Dalton and Foster and their baby sister. When Dalton is later playing, he hears noise in the attic, he climbs an old ladder to turn on the light, when it breaks and falls. The next morning, Josh goes to wake up Dalton, but he doesn’t move, he is rushed to hospital, where they find out that he is in an unexplained coma, he is later bought home where Josh and Renai can look after him. Over the next few days, disturbing events begin to occur, things move and voices are heard. They call in Elise, who deals in paranormal activity, they search the house and Elise sees something on the ceiling, described as a demonic figure, with a red face, claws and hooves, and as the film progresses, so does the activity. The film includes humour, have you seen a boy from the 1940’s dance to a record, me neither. And did you notice the boy before that part? Hmm, didn’t think so. The plot is very fluid until the ending, which could be seen as far-fetched but still leads to an exciting finish. An enjoyable experience for all you movie-goers and fans of saw, could there be an 8th film, maybe the one time the sound of a chalkboard could be enjoyable.

The film was very good, I think the best part was the mystery and suspense throughout the film, why was he in a coma? What is happening in the house? These things lead to a tense atmosphere in the audience, when I saw it, the whole audience were jumping at the right parts and laughing at the humorous parts, this makes the film enjoyable and interesting, whereas as we all know, having people talking during the film can ruin the whole experience. I think that the idea of the person being haunted is a concept that has exceeded the successes of the exorcist and the sixth sense and may be the best film of this type of horror.

The only bad that the ending seems very far-fetched, I have yet to see anyone who can leave their body behind while they sleep and then get it taken over by an old lady, it all sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? I would also say that the introduction to the film needs to be tweaked as watching it says to me ‘cheesy, tv-made film’
Overall, the film has exceeded all expectations and has satisfied all areas, comedy, horror, suspense, mystery and action. The ideas that have been included in this film have helped accelerate the horror industry into new levels. Also, the main villian has an uncanny resemblance to a young Darth Maul with hair.
